CHAPTER 10

More Trouble for Mary Kate

Just one week before summer was finished, school for Mary Kate would begin. Tina was still too little to be in school.

“How would you like to get a permanent wave put in your hair to look extra special for your first new school year at St. Savior’s?” Mommy asked Mary Kate.

“Yeah! Thank you, Mommy,” shouted Mary Kate.

Permanent waves were a new thing back then. Mommy’s friend, Agatha, was a beautician and had just learned how to make these wonderful curls in your hair that stayed for many months. Since Aunt

Kathy wasn’t around in the evenings to curl Mary Kate’s hair, Mommy asked Agatha to put curls in this new way. This also meant that Mary Kate wouldn’t be crying about how much it hurt to have the bobby pins dig into her head.

Agatha came to the Connors’ home on Kuegler Mill Road with the chemicals and curlers to put in Mary Kate’s baby fine blonde hair. Agatha didn’t use bobby pins in her hair to curl it. She used plastic rollers with rubber ties on them. No hurts for once.

Once the rollers were placed in Mary Kate’s hair, Agatha poured a chemical on Mary Kate’s hair to make the curls stay for good in the little girl’s hair. The odor of the chemical made it so hard for Mary Kate to breathe. She felt like she was suffocating. Mary Kate sat patiently but frightened that she wouldn’t be able to breathe. After the chemical was in place Agatha wrapped Mary Kate’s head in a towel.

“Now, we’ll leave the towel on your head to wait for the curl to take place,” said Agatha.

“Agatha, you are a nice lady to do this, but this stuff you have put on my hair smells bad, really bad!” exclaimed Mary Kate.

“I know, darlin’, it does smell terrible, but you will forget it when you see all those pretty curls in your hair,” reassured Agatha.

Mary Kate never had to sit so still for what seemed like the longest time ever with such a horrible smell to endure. Finally the time came to an end, and Agatha was ready to put on another chemical to stop the curling and rinse Mary Kate’s hair with water. It felt like freedom at last for the little girl once her hair was rinsed.

“Oh, I’m so glad that’s over!” exclaimed Mary Kate.

No one responded to her remark. There was so much silence in that bathroom where Agatha was rinsing Mary Kate’s hair over the bathtub. When Mary Kate looked up she saw Agatha looking terribly surprised and terribly sad.

“Margie, I need you to come here right now,” said Agatha anxiously.

Mommy came running into the bathroom where Mary Kate and Agatha were. Mommy stood completely still, like when you play freeze tag. She too was looking terribly shaken. As Agatha combed Mary

Kate’s hair Mommy began to cry and cry. Poor Mary Kate’s baby fine blonde hair was now grey; and, with each stroke of Agatha’s comb, Mary Kate’s hair was falling out of her head.
